Sofa Beds

In my 20 plus years on making custom furniture I've been asked to make a sofa bed only once.  It is essentially just a settle with a spring frame in place of cushions on a frame.  The hardware is easily obtained and is relatively inexpensive, and includes the mattress.

This settle is sized to fix a double size mattress. My customer originally purchased a bow arm sofa bed from Stickley but decided she did not like the look of the bow arms.  On sale it was in the neighborhood of $6,000. That order was cancelled within 48 hours of being placed.  I traveled to her house and designed a bed that fit her needs.

She decided on a Prairie Style frame in solid quartersawn white oak with a stain similar to Stickley's Onondaga.  The legs are 3" square quadralinear post construction.  The fabric was purchased from Stickley.

This is the frame during a dry fit.

This shows the frame at the upholsterers.

The upholsterer made 2 seat cushions, 2 back cushions, a pad to sit on top of the slats, and 4-14" square knife edge throw pillows.  This required 16 yards of material.  Without the pad or the throw pillows he would have needed only 14 yards.

The sofa was delivered mid December, 2015 and I forgot to take any photos of the final product.  I hope to make a trip to her house soon to get some final photos.

The 2016 price for a similar sofa bed with 2 seat cushions and 2 back cushions is $5,350.00.  This does not include the cost of the fabric. Figure a minimum of 14 yards with a small repeat, 16 yards with a repeat of more than 9".

Larger sizes are available at a slightly higher price.
